Broadband only - SoGEA
Say hello to cheaper, more reliable broadband
What is SoGEA?
Single order Generic Ethernet Access
SoGEA is a data-only service that does not include a traditional phone line or dial tone. SoGEA stands for Single order Generic Ethernet Access.
Everywhere that fibre broadband is available, either Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) or Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), SoGEA is also available. You get a better, more reliable broadband service, and no separate bill for line rental.

Who's it for?
Business customers mostly have a fixed line simply because it is required for their broadband to function. With the development and low cost of mobile phones, Hosted VoIP and SIP Trunking, as well as the countrywide installation of fibre networks, there is less and less need for traditional phone services.
- PBX/SIP Customers where all office telephony (SIP customers) will benefit from a broadband only data connection.
- Hosted VoIP Customers save paying for a cloud phone service they no longer use
- Hybrid Working with a dedicated broadband only connection only for work, no longer competing for bandwidth with Netflix
- Internet of Things (IoT) A cost effective connection for Machine to Machine (M2M) devices
Why SoGEA?
BT Openreach has announced that conventional ISDN phone connections will be phased out by the end of 2025. As part of the transition to an all-IP (Internet Protocol) future communications network, BT exchanges are currently closed to new PSTN orders. This means that traditional phone lines will be phased out in favour of faster fibre connections.
SoGEA broadband has many benefits compared to traditional broadband.
- Cheaper Costs: The combined cost of a phone line and broadband is somewhat more expensive than SoGEA – however this varies by supplier.
- Quicker fix times: Faults can be handled considerably faster because the consumer just needs to contact one provider.
- More reliable: Because there is no phone line, there is less chance of interference and an unstable connection.
- Ease of change: There is no need to change your router, and no need for an engineer to visit if you are migrating from an existing Fibre broadband connection.
- Static IPv4 Address comes as standard, with additional addresses available at a cost.
The drawback to this service is that SoGEA users will no longer have access to a landline phone number. SoGEA customers will have to adopt VoIP to be able make and receive phone calls. Therefore, any landline number that needs to be retained must be ported to a VoIP service before adopting SoGEA.
